BABYNE LITO (INDIAN SUMMER) AND TRADITIONAL WEATHER SIGNS

BABYNE LITO (INDIAN SUMMER) AND TRADITIONAL WEATHER SIGNS

In Ukraine, every season has its own mood. Spring is fresh and green, summer is hot and full of life, and winter is snowy and quiet. But autumn is special. After the first cold winds and rainy days, something surprising often happens: warm, sunny weather suddenly returns. Ukrainians call this period “бабине літо” (babyne lito) — Indian summer.

Why "babyne lito"?

One of the most visible signs of this season is the silver spider webs floating in the air. People say they look like the white hair of a grandmother, which may explain the name. Ukrainians also see this time as a gift before winter — the last warm kiss of summer before the long cold days.

This phenomenon is not unique to Ukraine. In English, it is known as Indian summer. In German, people call it Altweibersommer — literally, “old women’s summer.”

Folk weather wisdom

For centuries, Ukrainians have watched nature closely and developed many sayings to predict the weather. During babyne lito, these observations were especially important, because they helped farmers plan their harvest and prepare for winter. Here are some popular signs:

▪️Бабине літо непогодне — осінь суха.

Babyne lito is rainy — autumn will be dry.

If warm days are rainy or windy, the rest of autumn is often dry.

Geese fly high — autumn will be long.

Migrating birds were a natural calendar for Ukrainians.

Spider webs covering plants in the morning mean a warm, sunny day.

If willow leaves turn yellow in September, expect early frost.

If many leaves fall early, winter will be long and cold.

Pine cones growing low signal early frosts, high — late frosts.
