UKRAINIAN: HOW HARD IS IT REALLY?
Ukrainian among world languages
If you’ve decided to learn Ukrainian, congratulations — you’ve picked a language that is neither the easiest snack nor the toughest nut to crack. Linguists often place Ukrainian somewhere in the “medium-hard” category for English speakers. It’s not as brutal as Chinese with its tones, not as time-bending as Arabic with its roots and patterns, but it does have its fair share of tricky bits.
What languages it is similar to
Ukrainian belongs to the East Slavic group, together with russian and Belarusian, but also shares a lot with Polish and Slovak. Some linguists even say Ukrainian sounds the most melodic of all Slavic tongues. If you know russian, Polish, or another Slavic language, you’ll recognize many words, though beware of “false friends.” If you’re coming from English, Spanish, or Japanese — everything will feel fresh and exotic, but don’t worry, grammar has its own logic.
The main pitfalls
Cases: Ukrainian has seven of them. Nouns and adjectives constantly change endings. It’s like they put on a different outfit depending on where they’re going in the sentence.
Aspect in verbs: You don’t just “do” something, you decide whether it’s a one-off or a repeated habit.
For example:
- Imperfective (habit): читати – “to read” (regularly) → Я читаю щодня. (“I read every day.”)
- Perfective (one-time): прочитати – “to read” (once) → Я прочитав книгу вчора. (“I read a book yesterday.”)
Pronunciation: The alphabet is Cyrillic. Some letters surprise you: “г” sounds like a throaty “h,” “и” is pronounced like a short “i,” and “щ” is a tongue-twister on its own.
Word stress: It moves unpredictably, so the same word in different forms may suddenly shift its stress.
For example:
- гора́ (“mountain”) – stress on the second syllable.
- го́ри (plural “mountains”) – stress shifts to the first syllable.
What to be ready for
Be ready to juggle endings, roll your “r” like a Formula 1 engine, and sometimes make mistakes that Ukrainians will find adorable rather than annoying. They appreciate any effort to speak their language. A simple “Я вчу українську!” (“I’m learning Ukrainian!”) can spark a friendly conversation, often switching from “Where are you from?” to “Here, try this homemade varenyky!”
How many people speak Ukrainian
Around 40 million people worldwide speak Ukrainian as their native language. It is the official language of Ukraine, and before the war, you could also find Ukrainian communities in Canada, the United States, Poland, Germany, Brazil, and Australia. Since the war, however, Ukrainians have settled in almost every corner of the world, as many were forced to leave their homeland. So don’t be surprised if you meet a Ukrainian speaker anywhere!
Fun facts about Ukrainian
The longest word in Ukrainian has 30 letters: “дихлордифенілтрихлорметилметан” (a chemical compound).
Ukrainian alphabet has 33 letters, including the beautiful “ї” (yi), which looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale.
First phrases to start with
Here are some handy expressions to impress Ukrainians right away:
Привіт! — Hi!
Добрий день! — Good afternoon!
Дякую! — Thank you!
Будь ласка. — Please / You’re welcome.
Як справи? — How are you?
Все добре. — Everything is fine.
Я з …— I’m from …
Скільки це коштує? — How much is this?
Я вчу українську. — I’m learning Ukrainian.
With just these, you can already buy coffee, thank someone, and make a friend.
How much time to study
If you’re an English speaker starting from zero, think 5–7 hours a week to make steady progress.
Daily practice, even just 20 minutes, is far better than a Sunday language binge.
Knowing another Slavic language? Expect a faster ride, though grammar still won’t let you off the hook.
Learning Ukrainian is like joining a vibrant cultural club: you don’t just learn words, you step into a world of songs, poetry, and humor. It’s like learning to ride a unicycle while juggling — scary at first, hilarious in the middle, and deeply satisfying once you finally get the balance. And when you order your first borsch in Ukrainian without hesitation, you’ll feel like you’ve conquered a small Everest.
