WHY UKRAINIANS SWIM IN ICE-COLD WATER ON EPIPHANY: A THREE-SECOND RITUAL
Learn Ukrainian through culture, not just rules.
At our Ukrainian language courses, we teach living Ukrainian — the language that grows out of traditions, mentality, and real life. When you learn why Ukrainians do certain things, words and expressions stay with you much longer. One of the most striking traditions we explore with our students is Водохреща (Vodokhreshcha) and the famous swim in icy water.
WHAT IS ВОДОХРЕЩА?
Водохреща, also known as Epiphany in Ukraine, is celebrated on January 6th (or January 19th according to the old church calendar). It commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River and is one of the most important religious holidays (релігійні свята) in Ukrainian culture.
On this day, water is believed to become holy — освячена. Ukrainians take it home, drink it, wash with it, and keep it for the whole year for protection and healing illnesses — зцілювати хвороби. But the most dramatic part of the celebration is the tradition of swimming in icy water.
WHY DO UKRAINIANS SWIM IN ICE WATER?
The idea is simple but powerful:
to immerse yourself three times in ice-cold water, crossing yourself each time in honor of the Holy Trinity — Свята Трійця.
Cultural and spiritual meaning:
- Purification - очищення — washing away sins and negative energy
- Renewal - оновлення — starting the year spiritually and mentally clean
- Faith and strength - віра та сила — overcoming fear and discomfort
- Community - громада — people do it together, often laughing, encouraging each other
Contrary to stereotypes, Ukrainians don’t usually stay long in the water. It’s often just three seconds — три секунди, three dips — quick, shocking, unforgettable.
IS IT ABOUT RELIGION OR MENTALITY?
Today, not everyone who swims is deeply religious. For many Ukrainians, it’s also about mentality:
- Ukrainians are used to challenges — виклики
- We believe that discomfort can make you stronger — сильніший
- There’s pride in resilience and self-control — самоконтроль
- And yes — a bit of “I can do it” spirit — “Я можу це зробити”
This mix of spirituality, courage, and humor says a lot about Ukrainian character.
