When Ukrainians don’t fully understand how they feel, they rarely force a clear answer. These expressions are incredibly common in everyday Ukrainian speech. They reflect not just uncertainty, but a whole cultural attitude toward life: flexibility, quiet resilience, and the ability to live with unanswered questions.
Let’s look at some of the most telling examples.
“ЯКОСЬ ТАК” — SOMEHOW LIKE THAT
Якось так is probably one of the most Ukrainian phrases you’ll ever hear.
- How are you? — So so.
Як ти? — Якось так.
- What would you say? — Somehow this…
Ну, що скажеш? — Та якось так…
It doesn’t mean “bad,” but it doesn’t mean “good” either. It signals a vague emotional state: mixed feelings, mild disappointment, tired acceptance, or simply “I’m not ready to explain.”
Useful vocabulary:

- так — like this / so
- якось так — sort of like that
Cultural meaning:
Ukrainians often avoid dramatic overstatements. Якось так allows a person to be honest without oversharing. It’s emotional minimalism — saying little while meaning a lot.
“ТА НЕ ЗНАЮ” — WELL, I DON’T KNOW
At first glance, та не знаю sounds straightforward. But the tone matters.
- Do you want to go? — I don’t know...
Хочеш піти? — Та не знаю…
- What do you think of it? — I don’t know, we will see.
Що думаєш про це? — Та не знаю, подивимось.
This phrase often hides hesitation, politeness, or internal conflict. Sometimes the speaker does know — but isn’t ready to say it out loud.

Cultural meaning:
Ukrainian communication values emotional safety. Та не знаю gives space — to think, to feel, or to avoid pressure.
“НУ ТАКЕ” — MEH / SO-SO
Ну таке is a masterpiece of understatement.
- How is the film? — Meh.
Як фільм? — Ну таке.
- Did you like it? — Meh.
Сподобалось? — Та ну таке…
It can mean:
- mild disappointment
- ironic criticism
- emotional distance
- “I expected more, but it’s fine”
Cultural meaning:
Instead of harsh judgment, Ukrainians often soften criticism with irony. Ну таке lets you express dissatisfaction without drama.
“ПОБАЧИМО” — WE’LL SEE
Побачимо is not just about the future — it’s about uncertainty as a lifestyle.
- Is everything ok? — We will see.
Все буде добре? — Побачимо.
- Are you sure? — Well… we’ll see.
Ти впевнений? — Ну… побачимо.
It can sound neutral, hopeful, skeptical, or even slightly pessimistic — depending on context.
Useful vocabulary:
- бачити — to see
- побачимо — we’ll see
- впевнений — confident
Cultural meaning:
Living through historical instability has taught Ukrainians not to promise too much. Побачимо reflects cautious optimism and realism.
“ЯКОСЬ БУДЕ” — SOMEHOW IT’LL WORK OUT
This phrase deserves special attention.
Якось буде is not laziness. It’s faith mixed with experience.
- Will we make it on time? — Somehow it’ll work out.
Ми встигнемо? — Та якось буде.
- Aren’t you worried? — Somehow it’ll work out.
Ти не хвилюєшся? — Якось буде.
Cultural meaning:
This expression captures Ukrainian resilience. It means: “I don’t control everything — but I trust life, myself, and circumstances.”
It’s closely tied to the Ukrainian mentality of survival, adaptability, and quiet hope.
