THE LOCATIVE CASE IN UKRAINIAN: USAGE, EXAMPLES, AND THE TEST

The Locative Case (Місцéвий відмíнок) is a grammatical case which indicates a location. This case is used in the Ukrainian language together with prepositions, that is why it is also called the Prepositional Case. 

Questions it answers:

де? where?, на, у/в кóму? on, in whom?, на, у/в чóму? on, in what? колѝ? when?

Let’s look at the ending’s changing patterns in the Instrumental case in the table below.

Note: If the consonants к, г, х occur before the ending і in the locative, these letters change:

г-з – підлога – на підлозі (floor: a flat surface of a room)

к-ц – кішка – на кішці (cat (female)

х-с – поверх – на поверсі (floor: a level of a building)

When is it used?

1. To denote a location where an action takes place:

У пáрку сьогóдні гуляють багáто людéй. (парк – у парку)

Many people today walk in a park.

Пéсик грáється на підлóзі. (підлога – на підлозі)

A puppy is playing on the floor.

1. Telling the time with the preposition о (об):

(ordinal number in fem. g.)

Мій день починається о 7-ій (сьомій) годині ранку.

My day begins at 7 am.

Ми лягаємо спати об 11-ій (одинадцятій) годині вечора.

We go to bed at 11 pm.

1. To denote a month of action:

Святѝй Миколáй прихóдить у грýдні.

Saint Nicholas comes in December.

Його день народження в лютому. (лютий – в лютому)

His birthday is in February.

The months with prepositions in the Locative case:

1. To denote musical instruments one plays:

Я граю на синтезаторі, а мій друг грає на бас-гітарі.

I play the synthesizer, and my friend plays the bass guitar.

Моя подруга вчиться грати на скрипці. 

My friend (female) is learning to play the violin.

Exception: the word “піаніно” (piano) is invariable.

Note: Do not confuse the Locative and Accusative cases when they are used with the prepositions. 

1. The prepositions “на” and “у” used with the noun in the Locative case denote location: 

Я їм сніданок на кухні. (Loc.). Де я? 

I am eating my breakfast in the kitchen. Where am I?

2. The prepositions “на” and “у” used with the noun in the Accusative case denote direction: 

Я йду на кухню. (Acc.) Куди я йду? 

I am going to the kitchen. Where am I going?
