UKRAINIAN PRONUNCIATION: DO UKRAINIANS ROLL THEIR R’S?
Yes, Ukrainians do roll their R’s. The Ukrainian sound (звук) “R” is pronounced as a light trill or tap. This feature is a natural part of the ukrainian language (українська мова), and it gives the language its melodic and expressive character.
If you struggle with pronunciation, we’re here to help. For many learners discovering the Ukrainian language, pronunciation is one of the most important steps. We go beyond teaching rules — we prepare you for real-life communication. Whether you need a supportive Ukrainian language tutor or preparation for a Ukrainian language test, we guide you from Ukrainian for Foreigners A1 level to confident communication.
THE UKRAINIAN ALPHABET AND THE LETTER “R”
The rolled R appears in the ukrainian alphabet (український алфавіт). The letter is:
R - р
Unlike in English, the Ukrainian R is never silent. It is clearly pronounced in all word positions. For examples in the words:
- river — річка
- joy — радість
- market — ринок
If you want to read Ukrainian, mastering this sound is essential.
HOW TO PHYSICALLY PRONOUNCE THE UKRAINIAN ROLLED R (Р)
The Ukrainian R is usually a trill — тремтіння (the tongue vibrates) or a light tap (single quick contact)
1. Tongue Position (Положення язика)
Your tongue should:
- Be relaxed — розслаблений
- Lift toward the alveolar ridge (the small ridge just behind your upper front teeth)
- NOT touch the teeth directly
- Stay slightly tense at the tip
The tip of the tongue (кінчик язика) should lightly touch or almost touch the ridge behind the upper teeth. Think of where you say the English “t” or “d” — it’s almost the same place.
2. Airflow
This is what makes the trill happen.
- Push a steady stream of air.
- Do NOT force it.
- Let the air vibrate the relaxed tongue tip.
The vibration happens naturally if:
- The tongue is relaxed enough.
- The air is steady.
If you push too hard → it won’t vibrate. If the tongue is too stiff → it won’t vibrate.
3. Lips Position
- Lips stay neutral.
- Do NOT round them.
- Do NOT smile widely.
- Just relaxed and natural.
The sound comes from the tongue, not the lips.
4. Cheeks
- Completely relaxed.
- No tension needed.
- They do not participate in forming the sound.
STEP-BY-STEP EXERCISE
1. Start with English “D”
Say: “d-d-d-d-d”
Now move the tongue slightly further back toward the ridge.
2. Add Air
Try saying: “dddddrrrr”
Let air pass continuously.
3. Motorcycle Sound
Try saying: “dddddrrrr”
Let air pass continuously.
COMMON MISTAKES (FOR ENGLISH SPEAKERS)
❌ Using the English R (tongue pulled back)
❌ Curling the tongue too far back
❌ Tensing the tongue too much
❌ Trying too hard
Remember:
The tongue should vibrate because of air — not because you are shaking it manually.
LANGUAGE UKRAINIAN VS RUSSIAN: IS THE R THE SAME?
Many learners compare language ukrainian vs russian. While both languages have a rolled R, Ukrainian pronunciation is often softer and more melodic.
