THE VOCATIVE CASE IN UKRAINIAN: USAGE, EXAMPLES, AND TEST

The Vocative Case (Клѝчний відмίнок) (lat. casus vocativus, from voco – “I call”, “call”) is a grammatical case used for nouns and noun modifiers that identify an addressed person (animal, object, etc.). 

When is it used?

This case is used when addressing living beings or personified things.

The first form of a noun is in the Nominative Case; to change the case, we have to change the ending of a word. Changing words by the case is called declension. 

Let’s take a look at the ending’s changing patterns.

Note #1. Only nouns are declined in the Vocative case.

Note #2. Plural nouns in the Vocative case coincide with the Nominative one.

Note #3. Mr., Mrs, Ms. – Пан, Пані, Панна are declined in the Vocative case as

Пане, Пані, Панно.

Note #4. Masculine nouns that do not end in -a, -я, with the suffix -к-, -ик, -ок, -ко will end in -у in the Vocative case. E.g., батько – батьку, татко – татку.

Маріє, подай, будь ласка, маленьку ложечку. 

Maria, could you please pass me a small spoon?

О, море, як сильно я люблю дивитися на тебе!

Oh, sea, how much I love to look at you!

Спи спокійно, моє дитя!

Sleep peacefully, my child!
